What You are Missing In Your Exercise Routine

When it comes to fitness, many of us, myself included, have fallen into the trap of following someone else's recommendations without asking a crucial question: Will I actually enjoy this?

It's so easy to get swept up in a celebrity workout video, sign up for an influencer's fitness program, or purchase a trending workout plan without considering our personal preferences. The problem is that we often get lost in the doing—pushing ourselves for results without stopping to think about how we feel during the workout itself. Do we enjoy it? Are we having fun? And if the answer is no, it becomes a struggle to maintain consistency.

The Missing Element: Enjoyment

We often forget to ask a simple yet essential question: Do I enjoy this workout?

When we don’t enjoy the process, it becomes a grind, and pushing through workout after workout can quickly lead to burnout. We’re focused on results—toning up, losing weight, or hitting specific goals—but in the long run, it's enjoyment that keeps us going. If we’re not enjoying the journey, it's harder to stick with it.

The Power of Experimenting

Before you dive into a six-week or longer workout program, I recommend experimenting first. Try different styles, techniques, and instructors to see what resonates with you. YouTube is a fantastic resource for this. Whether you're curious about a certain workout trend or simply looking for something new, start with free videos.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I like the way this feels?
  • Do I enjoy the coach’s style?
  • Do the movements suit my body and energy levels?

If the answer to any of these is "no," it's a clear sign you won't enjoy sticking with that workout long-term. Instead of pushing through for results, pivot and try something else.

My Personal Favorites

I’ve experimented with plenty of different workouts over the years, and here are a few that I enjoy:

  • Tracy Anderson Method: Known for its toning and sculpting techniques, it's a unique, dance-inspired workout.
  • P.volve: A low-impact, functional movement workout designed to build strength without high-intensity.
  • Ashtanga Yoga: A more structured form of yoga that focuses on breath and flow. I love the discipline it brings, but yoga is personal, so finding the right instructor is key.
  • Stationary Bike: Lately, I’ve been enjoying a gentle ride at the end of my workouts to keep my heart rate up without pushing too hard.

I'm not saying you should sign up for all of these, but if you’re curious, test them out. Each offers a variety of YouTube videos, so you can get a feel before committing. With yoga especially, the instructor makes a world of difference. If their voice or style doesn't suit you, keep searching until you find one you like—you’ll be spending a lot of time with them!

Explore, Experiment, Enjoy

Ultimately, the key to building a sustainable workout routine is finding something you enjoy. Don’t be afraid to explore, experiment, and do some research. The more you enjoy your workout, the more likely you are to stick with it. And when you enjoy the process, working out becomes less about the grind and more about having fun.

So, take your time, discover what you like, and remember—it’s your workout. You should enjoy every moment of it
